Problem of the Day

Today is: Thursday, 28th August, 2008

As Maths Week has now ended, here are all the problems:


Problem 1: Juice Bottle

You buy a bottle of juice for 60p and the juice costs 40p more than the empty bottle. How much does the empty bottle cost?


Problem 2: Staircases

Make stair case with one cube at the top, then two below it, then three below it, etc. This is a three layer staircase:

 
  
   

How many cubes are needed for a staircase with 20 layers?


Problem 3: Count the Legs

A bird has 2 legs, a cat has 4 legs, an insect has six legs and a spider has 8 legs. There are twice as many birds as spiders and twice as many cats as insects. I see 38 legs. What could I be looking at?


Problem 4: Pizza Toppings

Blue Pizza has pizzas they prepared earlier! They offer these toppings for their standard large Pizzas:

  • Mushrooms
  • Olives
  • Peppers
  • Garlic
  • Onions

As well as ordering a plain Pizza you can order any number of toppings. The special uses all five toppings.

How many different kinds of Pizza can you choose?


Problem 5: Funny Fraction

Arrange the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 to form a single fraction which equals one third. (Calculators allowed)
